Project Case Study: Michael Goorevich Galley Kitchen

Collaboration is at the core of our design and fabrication process, integral to the success of our custom furniture, cabinetry and millwork. Partnering with other professional creatives in the art, design and architecture spaces allows us to explore the materiality and functionality of the pieces we produce for them. In the past, we’ve collaborated with Nick Dryden + Rachel Halverson on a Shaker-influenced walnut dining table, Abstrakt Concrete on a live-edge walnut and concrete table, Dryden Studio on the service carts for Sean Brock’s downtown restaurant, The Continental and today we’ll be reviewing one of our projects completed for architect, Michael Goorevich.

Back in 2022, we completed our first project, a galley kitchen millwork and cabinetry remodel  for one of our longtime friends, a local designer and architect. Goorevich had a vision for the space and we were able to fully execute and realize it through fabricating new kitchen built-in cabinetry, a pantry, a fireplace built-in and hardwood ceiling treatment. The openness and airiness that the kitchen now imparts is a testament to his vision for the remodeled space. Patrick Hayes, founder of Aberdeen, commented,  “I cannot believe how much bigger the space feels.” Executing Goorevich’s vision through our custom millwork and cabinetry is a testament to our painstaking attention to detail and continued commitment to collaboration with designers and clients.

Some features and details from this project that we frequently admire are:

Pantry Pullout System

Made of white oak veneer this wall storage unit makes items more accessible by vertically triple-stacking shelves which pull out in one piece. Nothing is lost or relegated to the back of the cabinet!

Center Room Divider

The floor-to-ceiling room divider with white oak shelving and cabinetry offers more storage space which is always needed in the kitchen but also makes the room feel larger by drawing the eye up.

Fireplace Built-In

On the other side of the center room divider is the custom made built-in piece constructed of white oak veneer cubbies for additional storage while keeping the fireplace as the focal point of the room.

Despite some of the challenges that were encountered during the construction phase, like erecting the long, runner shelf above the kitchen sink that needed more support than originally planned, this galley kitchen is a perfect example of seamless transitions from surface to surface and also from room to room. The careful planning and thoughtfulness that Goorevich put into the architectural plans for the reinvisioned space made for a functional and aesthetically pleasing space for Aberdeen to fabricate piece by piece.
